Vauz says it couldn't check for updates
This article is for the Vauz 2 beta. To find out whether there's a new version, Vauz reads a signed list of versions from vauz.sealzi.com. When that doesn't work, Settings, then Updates says so
Your vault isn't affected. Vauz keeps working as usual, and nothing is installed from a list Vauz couldn't get or couldn't trust
"Couldn't check for updates"
Couldn't check for updates
Vauz could not reach vauz.sealzi.com
After it comes the date and time Vauz last tried. Vauz asked vauz.sealzi.com for the list of versions and didn't get it
It may not be your Vauz, your Mac or your VPN. Our server may be down, or the list of versions on it may be missing or out of date. If your Mac is online, wait a while and try again later
Check that your Mac is online
For example, open vauz.sealzi.com (opens in a new tab) in your browser. If it doesn't open, check your internet connection first
Choose Try again
If it still doesn't work, try again later
Unless No outbound requests is on, Vauz also tries again by itself about an hour later, and each time it starts
What Try again does
Try again asks vauz.sealzi.com for the list of versions again, straight away. While it works, the card says Checking for updates… and Reading the signed list of versions from vauz.sealzi.com. Then it shows what Vauz found
If a new version is out, Vauz downloads it and tells you when it's ready to install
"Couldn't verify updates"
Couldn't verify updates
No list of versions Vauz could trust has arrived for a while. If your computer's clock is wrong, correct it
Each list of versions is good for a limited time, so that nobody can keep showing Vauz an old list and hide a newer version from you. This message means the last list Vauz accepted has expired, and no newer one has arrived since. If the latest list Vauz got wasn't trusted either, the line under the title gives the reason instead, as in the table below. The main Vauz window can show the same news in a card, Vauz could not verify updates, with a Check now button
There are two usual reasons:
- The list on our server is out of date. We haven't published a fresh one yet. Try again later
- Your Mac's clock is wrong. Open System Settings, then General, then Date & Time, and correct it. Then choose Try again
"Vauz did not trust the list of versions"
Couldn't check for updates
Vauz did not trust the list of versions: …
Vauz reached vauz.sealzi.com, but the list it got didn't pass its checks, so Vauz used nothing from it. The words after the colon say why:
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| it had expired or it was dated ahead | Check your Mac's clock, as above. If it's right, the list on our server may be out of date, so try again later |
| its signature did not match | Try again later, or on another network. If it keeps happening, please tell us |
| it was not a list Vauz can read | Try again later. If it keeps happening, please tell us |
| it was older than one Vauz already accepted | Try again later |
| it could not be checked | Try again later. If it keeps happening, please tell us |
If No outbound requests is on
With No outbound requests on, in Settings, then Security, Vauz doesn't check for updates by itself. So Couldn't check for updates only appears after you choose Check for updates or Try again. Couldn't verify updates can still appear once the last list Vauz accepted has expired
When you choose Check for updates or Try again with it on, Vauz asks you first, Check for updates?, and says Vauz asks vauz.sealzi.com for the signed list of versions. The site sees this computer’s IP address, as every website you visit does. Nothing else about you or your vault is sent. No outbound requests stays on. Choose Check to go on. A check like this only reads the list. It doesn't download an update
Turning on No outbound requests doesn't fix these messages. While it's on, Vauz downloads no updates, not even security fixes. To install an update, turn it off
Still stuck?
If the message stays for days while vauz.sealzi.com opens fine in your browser, please contact Vauz support with the exact words on the card and your Vauz version, which the bottom of Settings shows after Vauz version
