Understanding the "Autofill could not finish" Message

This message means the extension asked Vauz for your saved logins and the request failed part-way, for a reason the extension has no more specific message for

It is the extension's catch-all. Whenever it can tell what went wrong, it says so instead — Vauz did not respond, Vauz needs to be reconnected, Vauz is not connected or Reload this page to use Vauz — so seeing this one tells you the cause is none of those

Your saved passwords are not affected. Autofill only ever reads from your vault, and nothing was filled into the page. This is only about one request that did not complete

How You Will See It

The dropdown under the login field reads:

Autofill could not finish Something went wrong reaching Vauz. Try again, or open the extension to check the connection

It appears when the extension is set to Show Vauz logo in fields. With Autofill on field focus, the same failure shows nothing on the page — the field simply stays empty

This message does not add a badge to the toolbar icon or raise a desktop notification of its own. The dropdown is the only place it appears

What to Do

Try again

Click the Vauz logo in the login field again. Several of the causes below are one-off, and a second attempt goes through normally

Open the extension and look at the bar at the top

Click the Vauz Autofill icon in your browser toolbar

Opening the extension does not send a test request. The bar shows whether the extension is paired and any problem it has already recorded — and this message is not one it records. A green tick therefore does not mean autofill is working, only that the pairing is in place

Reload the page and try again

Press Cmd+R on a Mac or Ctrl+R on Windows, then click the Vauz logo in the login field

Restart your browser

Autofill runs through a small autofill helper that your browser starts the first time it needs one and keeps for as long as the browser stays open. Quitting and reopening the browser means the next autofill starts a fresh helper, which clears a helper that has got into a bad state

Check that Vauz and the extension are both up to date

If one was updated and the other was not, Vauz can receive a request it does not understand and turn it down without saying why. Update both, then try again

If Vauz was set up again from scratch, reset the extension

If Vauz's data was removed from this computer, or it was reinstalled with a clean slate, while the extension stayed installed, the extension is still holding its old pairing. Vauz cannot read requests made with it, and this is one of the cases where it shows Autofill could not finish rather than asking you to reconnect

Reset the extension and pair it again, following How to Reset Vauz Extension for a Fresh Start. Only do this once the steps above have not helped — a reset removes the pairing and your extension settings, and you will need to approve the new pairing in Vauz

Why It Happens

  • The autofill helper stopped part-way through the request. It had started answering, then closed — for example it was ended by antivirus or endpoint-security software, it crashed, or it was quit while your request was still waiting. If the helper does not answer at all, you see Vauz did not respond instead
  • Vauz turned the request down without naming a reason the extension recognises. Mismatched versions of Vauz and the extension, or a pairing that is out of step in a way Vauz cannot identify — most often because Vauz was set up again from scratch while the extension kept its old pairing
  • Several sign-in pages asked at the same moment. For example, login pages in two browser windows requesting your logins at once. One goes through and the other is turned away; trying again fixes it
  • Your browser did not tell Vauz which extension was asking. Vauz will not release logins when it cannot confirm who is asking. Restarting the browser starts a fresh helper, which normally resolves it
  • A fault in the extension or in Vauz itself. If it keeps happening and nothing above explains it, this is the likely answer — please contact us so we can look into it

What This Message Is Not

It is not an empty result. If Vauz answers and has nothing saved for the website, the dropdown tells you that instead. The extension does not show an empty list when it failed to get an answer from Vauz

It is not a declined prompt either. If you cancel the Release saved logins? prompt, or do not approve it, the dropdown simply closes. See Understanding the "Release saved logins?" Prompt
