Leave a family, remove someone or close it
Anyone in a family except its owner can leave it, with Leave family on the Family card. The owner,
and the guardians the owner names to help run it, can remove people and make a new invite code.
Only the owner can close the family
Every button below is on the Family card of your dashboard: sign in at https://vauz.sealzi.com/enter/ (opens in a new tab),
then scroll down to the card, or press Family (the heart) in the menu
None of this touches your vault. Your saved passwords stay on your own device, whatever happens to a family on vauz.sealzi.com
Who can do what
| Owner | Guardian | Everyone else | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the family | No: close it instead | Yes | Yes |
| Remove someone | Anyone but themselves | Members, but not the owner or another guardian | No |
| Make a new invite code | Yes | Yes | No |
| Close the family | Yes | No | No |
Everyone in the family can see who is in it, who pays for its plan, who has a seat and who is a guardian. People are shown by the name they chose on their dashboard, or, if they gave none, by a partly hidden email address such as j•••@example.com. To make someone a guardian, see Family seats and guardians
Leave a family
Step 1: Press Leave family
It is at the bottom of the Family card, beside Run by and the name of the person who runs the family
Step 2: Read what leaving means for you
A box asks "Leave this family?" and says what you lose:
- "You lose the family plan right away. A plan you pay for yourself isn't touched" — you have a seat on the family's plan
- "Your Premium is the family's plan, so it leaves with you unless someone else pays for one" (or Plus) — the family's plan is the one you pay for
- "You'll be out of the family straight away" — the family is on Free, or you had no seat in it
Step 3: Press Leave family
Or Cancel to stay. The dashboard says "You left the family 👋 A plan you pay for yourself isn't
touched", and your Family card goes back to "You're not in a family yet"
You can join another family, or come back to this one later with its name and invite code. If you come back, you join at the back of the queue for seats
If you paid for the family's plan, your plan stays yours: leaving does not cancel it, and you keep paying for it. To stop, see Manage your plan. The family moves to the best plan anyone left in it pays for, or to Free if nobody does. Nobody is emailed that you left, but anyone who loses the family's plan because of it is — see Family seats and guardians
If you run the family
There is no Leave family button for the owner, because a family needs someone to run it. You can
close the family (below), or, if you delete your account, the family is handed on to someone else in
it (below). The dashboard has no way to hand the family over while you keep your account
If you try to leave anyway, from a page that is out of date, it says "You run this family, so you can't just leave it 👑 Close it instead"
Remove someone
The owner can remove anyone else. A guardian can remove members, but not the owner or another
guardian, so Remove does not appear beside them
Step 1: Press Remove beside them
Step 2: Read the question
A box asks "Remove them from the family?" and names them, for example "Remove “Ben” (the name they chose)? They lose the family plan right away, and your invite code changes so the old one stops working". If they pay for the family's plan, it says the plan leaves with them unless someone else pays for one. If they had no seat, it says they leave the family
Step 3: Press Remove
The dashboard says "Removed 👋 Your invite code changed too, so the old one stops working"
What happens next:
- They are out of the family straight away, and lose the plan they had through it. A plan they pay for themselves is not touched
- Your invite code changes, so they cannot come straight back with the code they were given.
Emailed invitations sent before stop working too. Give the new code to anyone else who was about to
join: it is under
Invite new member + - They get an email, You were removed from a family on vauz.sealzi.com. It names the family, not who removed them, and tells them their account keeps working
- If someone in the family was waiting for a seat, the one they held goes to that person, who gets an email saying so
Make a new invite code
For when the code has gone further than you meant it to
Step 1: Press New invite code
It is at the bottom of the Family card
Step 2: Read the question
"Make a new invite code?" — "The current code stops working at once, so anyone you gave it to will need the new one. Email invites already sent stop working too"
Step 3: Press New code
The dashboard says "Fresh invite code 🔑 The old one no longer works". Everyone in the family can see
the new code under Invite new member +, and pass it on
New invite code works even when the family is full, so a code that has gone too far can be changed
before anyone leaves and a place opens
Close the family
Only the owner can close a family. It ends the family for everyone in it, and there is no undo
Step 1: Press Close family
It is at the bottom of the Family card
Step 2: Read the question
"Close this family?" — "Everyone leaves and loses the family plan right away. Your own plan stays put"
Step 3: Press Close family
The dashboard says "Family closed 👋 Everyone's getting an email about it", and your Family card goes back to "You're not in a family yet"
- Everyone is out of the family at once. Anyone who had a plan only through the family loses it, and anyone who pays for a plan of their own keeps theirs
- Each of them gets an email, Your family on vauz.sealzi.com was closed, saying its owner closed it and that their account keeps working
- Your own plan is not touched. If you were paying for the family, you keep paying for your plan: to stop, see Manage your plan
- To have a family again, create a new one and invite everyone again
When the owner deletes their account
The family is not closed. It is handed on: to its earliest guardian. If there is none, it goes to the person paying for its plan, and failing that, to whoever joined first. Everyone else stays in the family
A family with nobody else in it is closed
If the owner was paying for the family's plan, that plan stops with their account, so the family moves to the best plan anyone left in it pays for, or to Free. Anyone else who loses the plan gets an email about it. See Delete your account
The new owner's email
The new owner gets one email, You now run your family on vauz.sealzi.com. It says the owner deleted their account and the family is theirs to run now, and what that did to the family's plan:
- Nothing changed: "Everyone in it stays, and nobody’s plan changes because of this"
- The plan stayed, but seats moved: "Everyone in it stays, and the family stays on Plus, paid by" and who pays, then "Anyone else whose seat changed has an email about it"
- The owner who left was paying, and nobody else pays: "Everyone in it stays. They paid for the family’s Premium, so the family is on Free now. If anyone in it gets Plus or Premium, the family has that plan again"
- The owner who left was paying, and someone else pays for a smaller plan: "Everyone in it stays. They paid for the family’s Premium, so the family is on Plus now, paid by" and who pays
Otherwise it names the plan the family is on now, and who pays for it. If that plan has fewer seats than the family has people, the email also names who is on Free for now, and says the new owner can change who has a seat from their dashboard. Or it may say the new owner has a seat on the plan now, and that nothing is charged to them. It ends with what the new owner can do now: "You can now invite people, change the invite code, move seats, name guardians and close the family"
The new owner gets no other email about it. The seat emails below still go to everyone else they concern

| Your family on vauz.sealzi.com is on Free now | Nobody in the family pays for a plan any more. You stay in the family |
| You’re on Free in your family for now | The plan has fewer seats than the family has people, or the owner or a guardian gave your seat to someone else. You stay in the family |
| You have a seat on your family’s plan on vauz.sealzi.com | A seat came to you, so you have the family's plan now |

Just got back in with an emailed link?
If you lost your passkey and added a new one from a lost-passkey email link, that passkey has to wait 24 hours before it can change your family: leaving, removing someone and closing the family are paused, and so are starting or joining one, naming guardians and moving seats. You see, for example, "Safety pause 🛡️ You signed in with a passkey added from a recovery link, so removing family members is paused for another 23 hours and 5 minutes. Sign in with the original passkey, or come back then". It says how much of the wait is left, shows on top of the question you were answering, and stays on screen until you close it
Sign in with a passkey you had before, and the pause does not apply. Otherwise, wait until the time it names is up. Making a new invite code and emailing invitations are not paused. See the safety pause
If something doesn't work
After a refusal the question stays open, so you can try again
