Family Seats and Guardians

A Vauz Family shares one plan: the best plan anyone in it pays for. It does not have to be the person who created the family. If anyone in it has Plus or Premium, everyone with a seat gets it too, and is not billed for it

Seats

Each plan covers a set number of people, its seats, the person paying included:

  • Plus has 4 seats
  • Premium has 6 seats

A family can hold up to 6 people whatever plan it is on. When the plan has fewer seats than the family has people — say six people on Plus — the seats go:

  1. first to the person paying for the plan
  2. then to those who already have a seat, people paying for a smaller plan of their own first
  3. then to whoever joined the family first

Anyone without a seat stays in the family on the Free plan, or on a plan of their own, until a seat comes free. They get an email saying so, and the family's owner and whoever pays get one naming who is on Free. Someone whose own plan is already as good as the family's does not need a seat and does not take one

Your Family card on the dashboard shows the plan, who pays for it and how many seats are taken — for example Premium, paid by Ben · 4 of 6 seats taken — and marks anyone on Free for want of a seat

Everyone in the family can see who pays for its plan, who has a seat and who is a guardian

Who can join

  • Someone without a plan of their own can join only while there is a free seat
  • Someone with Plus or Premium of their own can join while the family has fewer than 6 people. If their plan is the best in the family, it becomes the family's plan and covers everyone with a seat

So a family on the Free plan, or one whose seats are all taken, can still take in a friend who pays: give them the invite code, and once they join their plan covers the family. If you need room for more than 6 people, contact support

Moving a seat

The family's owner, or a guardian, can give a seat to someone on Free for want of one: on the Family card, press Give a seat beside them and pick whose seat it should be. That person moves to Free until a seat comes back to them. The seat of the person paying for the plan cannot be moved

Guardians

The owner can make any member a guardian, someone who helps run the family: press Make guardian beside them on the Family card. A guardian can:

  • invite people, by the invite code or by email
  • change the invite code
  • move seats
  • remove members — but not the owner or another guardian

Only the owner can make someone a guardian, or take that back with Not a guardian, and only the owner can close the family. A guardian leaves the family like anyone else, with Leave family

When the owner deletes their account

The family is not closed. It passes to its earliest guardian, or if there is none to the person paying for its plan, or failing that to the member who joined first. The new owner gets an email saying the family is theirs to run. A family with nobody else in it is closed
