Autofill in the Vauz 2 beta
The Vauz 2 beta fills your saved logins in your browser through Vauz Autofill 2.0, the version of the extension made for Vauz 2. The version for Vauz 1.x doesn't work with Vauz 2

Connect Vauz Autofill to Vauz
Each time Vauz starts, it connects itself to the browsers on your Mac. That's what Autofill in browsers does, in Settings, then Extensions. It's on unless you turn it off
Under it, Vauz lists the browsers on your Mac that it can set up, in alphabetical order, and says whether each one is set up. Each browser Vauz has set up has a switch of its own, to turn autofill off in that browser alone. Firefox Developer Edition and Firefox Nightly use Firefox's setup, so they say Set up with Firefox and follow Firefox's switch
Connect Vauz Autofill in each browser you use it in. Each browser is connected on its own
Open Vauz from your Applications folder
A copy of Vauz opened from the disk image can't connect to browsers. See Install the Vauz 2 beta
In your browser, open Vauz Autofill and choose Begin binding
Click Vauz Autofill in the toolbar, or in the browser's Extensions menu if it isn't in the toolbar. Vauz Autofill shows a code
Check the code, then choose Connect in Vauz
Vauz asks Connect a browser extension? over your browser, names your browser, and shows a code too. Choose Connect only if it's the same code Vauz Autofill shows. If it isn't, choose Cancel
Vauz's own window stays out of the way, so the code in Vauz Autofill stays in view. If Vauz wasn't open, it starts without its window. Click Vauz in the Dock to see it
Once you choose Connect, Vauz Autofill 2.0.2 says Connected to Vauz. Choose Done to close it. Vauz Autofill 2.0.1 opens a thank-you page instead
Nothing connects without your yes in Vauz. The extensions you've connected are listed in Settings, then Extensions, under Browser extensions connected to Vauz. Each line names its browser and when it connected. Forget beside one removes that browser's connection and leaves the others. Reset autofill in all browsers, under the list, removes every connection, and each browser then asks to connect again
Updated from beta.4 or earlier? Vauz now keeps each browser's connection apart, so you may need to connect Vauz Autofill once more in each browser. If Vauz Autofill says Vauz needs to be reconnected, open it and choose Begin binding
If Settings, then Extensions says a browser is set up for another copy of Vauz, choose Use this copy of Vauz
Every fill asks you first
Before Vauz shows a site's logins in your browser, you approve it. Vauz asks in one of three ways:
- Touch ID, on a Mac with Touch ID. The request names the site and your browser
- Your V-Key, when your vault has a V-Key and Touch ID can't be used. Vauz asks in its own window, Vauz: show your logins for followed by the site. Type your V-Key and choose Show logins
- Allow or Don't allow, when your vault has no V-Key and your Mac has no Touch ID set up. More below
If Vauz is locked, the same yes unlocks it too, and the request says so. With a V-Key, Touch ID can do that only when Unlock with Touch ID is on, in Settings, then Security. Otherwise Vauz asks for your V-Key, which unlocks it
Once you approve, Vauz fills your login. Depending on Vauz Autofill's settings, you may first choose which of the site's logins to fill
The V-Key window
The window names your browser, for example Firefox asks to show your Vauz logins for followed by the site. The eye beside the field shows what you typed, and hides it again
If the V-Key is wrong, the window stays open and says That V-Key was wrong in red, so you can type it again. After three wrong V-Keys in one window, or too many wrong V-Keys in Vauz, it closes and says Too many attempts, so nothing was filled. Wait a while before you try again. Cancel fills nothing
Without a V-Key: Allow or Don't allow
If your vault has no V-Key, Vauz still asks for Touch ID on a Mac that has it, and Touch ID unlocks Vauz too if it is locked. On a Mac with no Touch ID set up, Vauz asks in its own window, Vauz: show your logins for followed by the site, with Allow and Don't allow. Don't allow is the default, so Return and Escape choose it. If Vauz is locked, the window says so, and Allow unlocks it too
If your Mac has Touch ID but it can't be used right now, for example after too many tries, Vauz fills nothing and says why. It never offers Allow in its place
Allow is the least protected way to approve a fill. It asks for nothing only you know, so anyone who can use your Mac can choose it. A V-Key, with Touch ID beside it, makes sure it's you. See Set a V-Key in the Vauz 2 beta
One yes covers that site for up to two minutes
After you approve a fill, Vauz can fill again on the same site, in the same browser, for up to two minutes without asking. If you say no, or Vauz locks, it asks again next time
To be asked every time, open Vauz Autofill's settings and turn on Prompt for authentication on every autofill
When Vauz Autofill shows you a list of logins, choose one within about two minutes. After that, Vauz Autofill 2.0.2 takes the logins away and says This request has expired. Choose Ask again to ask Vauz for them once more
When a page asks too fast
If a page asks for logins faster than people usually fill, Vauz stops and asks you first: Vauz paused filling for followed by the site. Choose Show logins to go on, and Vauz then asks for Touch ID, your V-Key, or Allow as usual. Don't show stops it
Only on https pages
Vauz fills logins only on pages loaded over https. On a page loaded over http, Vauz Autofill shows a warning instead of your logins, usually This page isn't secure, and Vauz fills nothing there. To fill your login, open the site's https:// address. This applies to pages on your own computer too
If Vauz Autofill shows a message
- Vauz did not respond: try again. If it keeps happening, open Vauz from your Applications folder once, so it reconnects autofill, and check that Autofill in browsers and your browser's switch are on, in Settings, then Extensions
- Vauz is not responding, in Vauz Autofill's window: open Vauz from your Applications folder
- Vauz needs to be reconnected: open Vauz Autofill and choose Begin binding again
- Vauz has an old pairing for followed by your browser, or in Vauz Autofill 2.0.1, Vauz knows this extension under a different key: in Vauz, open Settings, then Extensions, and choose Forget beside your browser. Then choose Try again in Vauz Autofill
- Binding unsuccessful: make sure Vauz is open, then choose Begin binding again, and Connect in Vauz only if the two codes match
- Autofill could not finish: try again, or open Vauz Autofill to check the connection
- This request has expired: choose Ask again
If Vauz shows a message
- The browser gave up waiting before you answered, so nothing was filled: try again from the page, and answer Vauz sooner
- A browser asked for your Vauz logins, but Vauz is installing an update: try again once the update is done
- A browser asked for your Vauz logins, but Vauz has installed an update: quit Vauz and open it again, then try again
